Talent is universal, opportunity is not.
Our Community
Community ownership and engagement are central to Mwanzo’s identity. During the construction of the Mwanzo Wetu Center of Excellence Academy (MWCEA; recently renamed from Mwanzo Education Center), Rabuor families worked tirelessly to transport building materials, provide meals for the local construction crew, and ensure that children were safe. Similarly, parents and guardians play a major role in the provision of school feeding at MWCEA by donating grain twice per year when they harvest crops. “Our garofa,” or “our two-story building,” is a common phrase among people in Rabuor. This sentiment embodies the essence of Mwanzo. Community members in Rabuor and nearby villages share immense pride in not only MWCEA, but also in the liveliness, activity, and shared hope that Mwanzo’s programs ignite.

Loyce Ong’udi
FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
loyce@mwanzo.org
Loyce Ong’udi (MPA) was born and raised in the small village of Rabuor in Western Kenya. During her childhood and adolescence, Loyce did not see herself as someone experiencing poverty, but as a young woman benefitting greatly from the strong support of her community. After coming to the United States in 1996, she found her way to Seattle and began working for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. During her three years at the foundation, Loyce learned about the health inequities that many countries face, and she began to reflect on her home village and the challenges that her friends and family were experiencing. Compelled to act, she founded Mwanzo and led the way for sustainable, community-driven development in Rabuor and 14 surrounding villages. Loyce believes that healthy communities must have a strong foundation of global-cultural linkages between generations. A Harry Truman Scholar, Loyce graduated from the University of Washington in 2008 with a Master of Public Administration. In 2015, she was named a Seattle Central College Distinguished Alumna.
